The Ujala brand’s advertising journey is noteworthy. Its jingle was a big hit and kept the brand thriving. An old TV commercial for this fabric blue brand brings back memories of the catchy tune “Aaya Naya Ujala, Char Boondo Wala…Ahaa.” This jingle still sparks nostalgia today. No list of top ’90s ad jingles would be complete without “Chaar Bundo Wala…Ujala.” Now let’s explore the inspiring journey of Ujala’s founder, Ramachandran.

Jyothy Labs Founder

Ramachandran is the founder and Chairman Emeritus of Jyothy Labs. He hails from Thrissur, Kerala. Jyothy Labs has grown into a famous brand over time, launching well-known products like Ujala Supreme Fabric Whitener and EXO Dish Wash Bar.

Ramachandran Journey

Ramachandran’s journey started with a B.Com degree from St. Thomas College. He worked as an accountant after his post-graduation. But his real passion was to start his own business and create innovative products.

He tried to create a laundry whitener, doing experiments in his kitchen. Even though he faced initial failures, an article in a chemical industry magazine about using purple dyes for the whitest and brightest textiles inspired him. Motivated by this concept, Ramachandran spent a year experimenting with purple dyes to make an effective clothes whitener.

Jyothy Laboratories Foundation

In 1983, Ramachandran started a temporary factory in Thrissur on a part of his family land. He did this with a Rs 5,000 loan from his brother. He named the factory Jyothy Laboratories after his daughter, Jyothy. The company’s first big hit was the Ujala Supreme liquid fabric whitener. This product catered to the growing consumer demand for brighter and whiter clothes.
