Why did Dhanam Paati start her idli business?
She was determined to keep the meals affordable. She began her business in a tough financial time. She had two kids and a sick husband. Despite this, she insisted on keeping the meals cheap.
She first sold idlis for 3 paisa. As her children grew, she slowly raised the price. Yet, even four years back, an idli was priced at just Re 1.
When did Dhanam Paati start her business?
She increased the price of her idlis after her husband passed away three years ago. She believes that a full meal should cost no more than Rs 10.
Despite her own needs, the 86-year-old focuses on helping others. She gets by on many cups of tea and the kindness of people who give her rice, lentils, and sometimes money.
Her only wish is for a sturdy, permanent home. Her current house is in poor condition and could fall apart any time.
How does Dhanam Paati make such affordable idlis?
She uses rationed grains and pulses to make the idli batter and sambhar. The ration she gets is not enough for the quantity she makes. But her loyal customers and supporters help her with their ration rice. This kindness and her own generosity are why her prices are so low.
You might wonder why she’s still working in her 80s. She says her son and daughter are also having a hard time, so she doesn’t want to burden them.
Known as Idli Amma, she gained fame for selling idlis at just Re 1. Anand Mahindra, impressed by her dedication and hard work, promised to buy her a house.
